Central Cass Booster Club Print E-mail
It’s football season and it’s volleyball season.  That also means it’s booster club season.     The Central Cass Booster Club began its fall season at the Northern Cass football game last Friday, but there’s been a lot of work going on behind the scenes all summer long, and a long time before that.     We all like to think that we’re important, that we’re all somehow making a difference in our community, at the school or with our kids.  The booster club is.     In fact, Central Cass’ athletic booster club might be the most effective organization in Casselton.  The group has accomplished so much in recent years that it’s hard to detail all their good works and I know they have a lot more good ideas cooking as we speak.     From a park district perspective, the booster club has been great.  The boosters have consistently supported all of the plans and improvements we’ve made at the high school baseball field.  New fencing, new dugouts, infield upgrades, a sprinkler system, a batting cage and a new backstop are just a few of the additions we’ve been able to make thanks to the booster club’s financial support.     In addition, the booster club and all its good board members found time to finance a big chunk of the concession stand that we use year-round and build a couple of state-of-the-art grandstands for our football, baseball and track teams and their fans.      All of that has happened in the last five or six years because our booster club has worked hard to generate the revenue needed to make our athletic facilities and programs better.  Period.     It takes a lot of effort from a lot of people to make this whole booster club deal work.  Running concession stands and working all the tournaments and events requires a lot of organization by the board and a consistent stream of volunteer workers night in and night out, season to season.     I’ve been involved enough the past few years to see a big problem developing:  Too many board members end up killing themselves working game nights.       Here’s an example:  My wife Denise and I helped board member Dianna Holm at a few basketball games last winter and the poor woman ran herself ragged.  Holm got to the school before 5 p.m. to set everything up in the concession stand and cook whatever was on the menu for the evening, which is plenty of work in and of itself.     Holm wasn’t done, though.  Far from it.  She babysat food in the kitchen and ran back and forth to the concession stand all night making sure her workers had what they needed.  After that, she spent another hour or so cleaning everything up, hauling out garbage and counting up the money in the till.  We didn’t leave the school until 10 p.m. the night we helped and Holm, God bless her, was still there when we left.     Ridiculous, I know, but there’s something every one of us who has kids at Central Cass and even those who don’t can do to help Holm and all the other overworked board members.     First, if you’re not a booster club member, pay your $10 or $15 and join.  Better yet, write out a $50 or $100 check when you send in your registration form and tell them to keep the rest as a donation.     Next, volunteer yourself and your spouse or your mom and dad or grandma or grandpa to help work in the concession stands, which rake in all the dollars the boosters use to make life better for our kids.  Sign up to work two or three sports and if no one calls you to work, find a board member and volunteer yourself.     My wife must have felt sorry for Holm and everyone else on the booster club board because she agreed to serve a term recently.  Denise likes running around with her hair on fire, so it looks like she picked the right organization to work with.     That means I’m going to get involved more than I probably will want to, but so be it.  The boosters help my kids, the school, the parks department and the community in more ways than we can count.     There’s lots more to do (Can you say lights for the baseball field?) so sign up, volunteer and let’s get to work.

We’ll start another season of third and fourth grade flag football on Tuesday, September 14.     I passed out registration forms and information to the kids at school earlier in the week.  Our entry deadline is Monday, Sept. 13.     We’ll play Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 5:30 p.m. on Diamond I at Tinta Tawa Park.  If you have any other questions concerning the fall program, contact me at 730-7275 or 347-5386.
